Food insecurity affects almost every community across Pennsylvania. Despite being known for its picturesque farms and economically vibrant communities, Central Pennsylvania grapples with consistent access to nutritious food for everyone, even in Sun Country.

More than 50 years ago, members of several Derry Township churches, in an initiative spearheaded by Jim Stover, joined forces to feed the hungry.

In 1967, they founded Derry Township Social Ministry at First United Methodist Church of Hershey, with a mission to provide clients with cans of food and fresh vegetables. As they grew in size and scope, they moved to the basement of the Holy Trinity Church on Cocoa Avenue and operated there for many years.

In 2010, they became the Hershey Food Bank and Community Outreach, and in 2013, thanks to a donation for funds and land from The Hershey Company, the Hershey Food Bank and Community Outreach moved to their current location at 120 East Derry Road, Hershey.

Odette Bergloff served for many years as the organization’s treasurer and now handles the intake of new clients.

“The food bank helps feed about 350 families a month, representing around 1,100 individuals,” Bergloff said. “We receive no government funding. We rely on churches, businesses, clubs, scout troops, Hershey Middle School’s annual Turkey Trot food drive and individual donations.”

Jim Mulvey, president of the board of directors at the food bank, says when he mentions the existence of a food bank in Hershey, people are shocked.

“Most people are surprised to learn that we have a food bank because Hershey is known as an upscale community. But we have all economic levels in Derry Township and more need than you can imagine. We find it very rewarding to help and are so grateful and happy we are here to do what we can.”

Just last Thursday, the food bank served 145 families, ranging from one to nine family members, with a well-oiled, seasoned volunteer crew.

“I love helping all the families,” Bergloff said. “I get to hear their story and help not only with food, but depending on their situation and needs, we try to provide clients with referrals for other resources. Some of their stories are truly heart breaking; people have been through very difficult situations and are trying their best to make ends meet.”
